Sandton is the richest square mile in Africa, to quote its promotional material. It’s also experiencing an unprecedented building boom, with a new shining corporate HQ seemingly going up on every corner. This burgeoning creates an interesting landscape of contrasts - slick surfaces and roadways torn apart to lay electrical cables, Sandton’s old landmarks abut half-finished buildings. A new informal economy has developed to service the needs of those bussed in to build this cityscape, as workers cross paths with the well heeled professionals who ordinarily traverse the area.
